David started as a journalist and broadcaster in the West of England in the 1950s, and soon also began writing books. Then he founded the publishers David & Charles on April Fools Day 1960.

Though at first an extension of the freelance portfolio, David & Charles became a substantial international publishing business. Readers Union, the book club bought in 1971, steadily grew until there were 21 specialist clubs with 250,000 members. Staff totalled up to 300.

David & Charles was sold in 1990 but still operates in Newton Abbot, Devon, now under the ownership of F&W Publishers of Cincinnati, Ohio.

On the sale, David moved to the shores of the Moray Firth on the edge of the Scottish Highlands where he developed Writers’ News into the main support system for UK writers. David still contributes a column for it each month.

Some money from the sale of David & Charles was used to create the David St John Thomas Charitable Trust, details of which follow.
